Fire District 3 crews were dispatched to a structure fire shortly after midnight Sunday at 505 Holgerston Road, in Sequim. Upon arrival, fire units found heavy smoke and flame showing from the single family wood frame residence, belonging to John and Rose Katte. The residents were evacuated from the home by neighbors Ben and Kim Skerbeck who heard explosions and saw flames from their residence at 507 Holgerson Road. Mr. Katte was able to move a vehicle away from the front of the house and park it safely across the street.
According to Lt. Paul Rynearson, who was the officer in charge of the first arriving Engine, “The house was about 25% involved when we arrived”.
Fire crews began supressing the fire from outside the residence and when additional personnel were on scene, fire teams were able to transition to an interior fire attack and enter the building.
The fire was knocked down within a half hour.
3 Fire Engines, 2 Water Tenders, 1 Rescue Unit, a Paramedic Aid Unit, 2 Assistant Chiefs, the District PIO and Sequim Ambulance Unit all responded to this call.
No injuries have been reported from this fire.
Fire and smoke damage to the residence are extensive.
The American Red Cross is providing assistance to the family.
The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation.
