Clallam County Fire District 3 was dispatched to a commercial structure fire at 61 Hooker Road at 9:45 pm Friday night, June 24, 2010. Arriving units found heavy smoke and flames coming from the West side of the building, occupied by Novus Auto Glass. Fire crews immediately began to attack the fire from the exterior with a 2 ½ inch line and gained access to the building through a roll up door. According to Captain Daryl Sharpe “We initiated an aggressive fire attack, were able to cut through the doors and continued our suppression with both career and volunteer personnel as additional resources arrived on scene” No one was in the building at the time of the fire and there are no injuries. The fire was first reported by a fire district employee, mechanic John McIntyre who was driving by shortly before 9:45, saw gray smoke and called 911. Due to his experience as a volunteer firefighter, McIntyre was able to give an accurate and helpful description to emergency dispatchers who dispatched crews from fire stations in Sequim, Carlsburg, Dungeness, and Blyn. A second “general alarm” was quickly issued for personnel and equipment from throughout the fire district. A total of 6 engines, an Aid Car, Assistant Chief Tony Hudson, the Public Information Officer and over 20 firefighters responded. Additional support was provided by the Clallam County Sheriff and Olympic Ambulance. The Public Utility District also sent a crew to turn off power to the building. The business is owned by Brent Larson who rents the building from Elmer Forderer. According to Mr. Larson, 4 vehicles were in the building at the time of the fire; a 1937 Plymouth, a 1958 Volkswagen Karmen Ghia, a 1966 Ford Pickup, and a 2000 Ford Ranger. The Plymouth and the Karmen Ghia were mostly restored and were owned by customers. The cause of the fire is under investigation and damage estimates will be available as part of that process. For further questions please call Lt. Bob Rhoads 460-9135.
